Coronado neighborhood favorite Tuck Shop has been dark for months, but now it’s clear the restaurant won’t be reopening.
Tuck Shop was located at the southeast corner of 12th and Oak streets near downtown Phoenix. The neighborhood spot had been open for more than ten years and was known for its cozy atmosphere and modern American food.
The Coronado, a vegan and vegetarian cafe located just a few blocks away on 7th Street and Monte Vista Road, will take over the space in May.
In the past year, The Coronado battled through challenges ranging from the coronavirus pandemic to an fire started by a delivery truck that knocked out the electrical panel for the building. Now, the restaurant will move into a more spacious building to serve an expanded version of its menu of vegetarian tacos, sandwiches and baked goods.
What to know about Tuck Shop
The low-profile green building was formerly home to Tuck Shop, a neighborhood restaurant opened by restaurateur DJ Fernandes in 2008.
The restaurant changed hands in 2016 when entrepreneur Grace Unger and her family took over the business. In 2019 Unger partnered with downtown Phoenix development company True North Studio, which still lists Tuck Shop as a project on its website.
Located across from the Sunshine Market, a longtime community convenience store, Tuck Shop was at the heart of the historic neighborhood. Customers often walked or biked from home to the restaurant which served brunch and afternoon tea along with dinner and cocktails.
“I used to go to the Tuck Shop all the time,” Unger told The Arizona Republic in 2016. “Living somewhere, knowing your neighbors and having that sense of community, you don’t really get that anywhere other than downtown Phoenix in those historical districts.”
Here’s why The Coronado is moving
The Coronado is co-owned by John and Liz Tavarez, Emily Spetrino and Elle Murtagh. The restaurant is currently located in an old house with a restaurant kitchen installed in what was originally a bedroom, and Murtagh says the need for more room inspired the move.
“We’ve reached our capacity at this space,” Murtagh says.
The larger kitchen allow for an expanded menu, Murtagh says. But fans can be sure they’ll still find favorites on the menu.
“We can’t ever not have cauliflower tacos,” Murtagh says, referring to one of The Coronado’s most popular dishes.
The vegan and vegetarian restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner along with a selection of baked goods. But the connection to community runs deeper than food; the restaurant has often hosted events and fundraisers for social justice organizations.
Murtagh hopes the move will allow The Coronado to become even more ingrained with the community.
“From day one our goal has been to be the neighborhood haunt,” Murtagh says. “The folks in this neighborhood have always supported us so hard, we are excited to be moving further into the neighborhood.”
The lease on the Tuck Shop space starts in May, Murtagh says, so The Coronado team plans to move into the new location over the summer. Until then, The Coronado remains open in its original location.
