Michigan’s Best Local Eats: Family recipe guides Nick’s Original House of Pancakes’ from-scratch meals

ANN ARBOR, MI — Nick Panos takes pride in his “from-scratch kitchen.”

“We crack our own eggs,” said Panos, owner of Nick’s Original House of Pancakes in Ann Arbor. “We make our own batter.”

The batter recipe, a close-kept secret, was created by his aunt, also a local restaurant owner.

Nick’s Original House of Pancakes, 3030 Lohr Circle, celebrates its 13th anniversary in December, Panos said. The restaurant focuses on breakfast food, serving up omelets, biscuits and gravy and, of course, pancakes.

“Obviously, pancakes are the highlight,” Panos said.

GROW San Mateo and Samaritan House Food Pharmacy provide healthy food | Local News

GROW San Mateo formed as a collective project to provide free healthy food to promote a healthier lifestyle and educate people on the importance of fresh produce.

Bill Schildknecht started the GROW San Mateo project in March of 2019 for a collection of local gardeners grow and donate fresh produce. He learned about the Samaritan House Food Pharmacy that summer, which is a part of the organization’s free medical clinic, and began a partnership. In the spring of this year, it started to host a table at the two food pharmacy clinics in San Mateo and Redwood City.

Board Porch Coffee has widened its footprint in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley with the opening of its first full-fledged brick-and-mortar cafe in the town of Luray.

About two years in the making, the coffee shop occupies a historic downtown Luray building about 30 miles northeast of the roasting company’s original retail outpost, a stand at the Agora Downtown Market in downtown Harrisonburg, Virginia.
