The final week of July will be known as “Vegan Week” in Worcester as it plans to celebrate the 11th annual New England VegFest.

The virtual vegetarian festival scheduled from July 25 through Aug. 1 will include activities, including some in person, speakers from around the country and will coincide with Worcester Mayor Joseph Petty referring to the celebration as “Vegan Week,” the festival’s promoters said.

Meera Sodha’s vegan recipe for tomato and turmeric kitchari | Vegan food and drink

Kitchari is a mixture of rice and lentils, cooked with usually only a few spices. It is the height of comfort for most Indians, and what most women in my family make when everyone’s tastebuds need a rest. It’s a vote for a simpler meal, the equivalent of a pleasant cycle ride down a winding country lane. In our family (the youngest being just one), it is one of only a few meals we can put in the centre of the table and eat together – as a cook, that is the ultimate comfort.

Meera Sodha’s vegan recipe for dry-fried beans with minced tofu | Vegan food and drink

When I had my first blistered and wrinkly Sichuanese dry-fried beans, I ate them like McDonald’s fries. They were salty, soft and crunchy, which in my book are all bywords for addictive. Throw together the words party and food, and it’s like travelling back to the 1980s, when, as a family, we partied hard. The key with the food was to have a few big things that could be made in batches and in advance, leaving you free to play the spoons for friends and your guests to help themselves. In that respect, these potatoes fit the brief perfectly: they can be eaten hot or cold, scaled up, made earlier, and get on well with all sorts of other flavours and dishes. In short, they’re on your side – they want

Believe It Or Not, These 6 Foods Aren’t Vegan or Vegetarian

Meat, cheese, eggs, milk: these are four, very-obvious foods that aren’t vegan or vegetarian. But there are plenty of foods that look like they should be plant-based that, in actuality, are not. Take Jell-O, for example. The fruity dessert doesn’t contain meat, cheese, or any dairy product. Look closer at the nutrition label, though, and you’ll find gelatin, an animal byproduct made of bones and ligaments that’s used to give Jell-O its pliable appearance. Yikes…

The truth is, there are many animal-derived ingredients that show up in foods you may consider A-okay for non-carnivores. The list is quite long,
